The past couple of weeks here at Sunnyridge Equestrian have been nothing short of magical. Our farm is buzzing with campers, laughter, pony games, and that undeniable sense of joy that comes from spending full days outdoors, away from screens, and surrounded by nature and animals.

Located just outside Halifax, near Truro, Sunnyridge is proud to offer a unique summer camp experience that blends equestrian fun with outdoor adventure, leadership development, and hands-on farm life.

A Break from Screens — A Reconnection with Nature

For so many of our campers, camp is a much-needed detox from cell phones, video games, and the constant buzz of technology. Here, kids reconnect with the simple pleasures of real-life experiences:

• Grooming and leading horses

• Feeding bunnies and farm animals

• Learning the basics of horsemanship and stable management

• Playing cooperative games like parachute challenges, pony relays, and farm scavenger hunts

• Crafting with natural materials and getting hands-on in the garden

There’s something truly grounding about waking up early, hearing the horses greet the day, and spending hours exploring paddocks, fields, and forest trails — all while building new friendships.

Leadership in Action: Our Junior Leaders Shine

Another standout aspect of our camp is our Junior Leadership program, where older campers have a chance to mentor younger ones, assist in daily activities, and develop responsibility, confidence, and empathy.

This past week, our Junior Leaders helped run fun stations like:

• A “Parts of the Horse” grooming game

• Helping younger campers tack up their ponies

• Leading paddock walks and pointing out horse behaviours

• Assisting with art projects and barn chores

Watching these young leaders grow in their skills — not just as helpers, but as thoughtful role models — is one of the most rewarding parts of our summer programming.

A Place to Breathe, Learn, and Laugh

We’re seeing firsthand how important it is for kids to breathe deeply, move their bodies, and use their imaginations. Whether it’s slipping and sliding on our water play days, riding through obstacle courses on horseback, or simply hanging out in the shade with the bunnies, these are the moments that build confidence, creativity, and joy.
